Permanent weight loss can be very difficult. For some people, even with exercise and a healthy diet, losing weight seems impossible. Often, the culprit is a damaged metabolism. Let Dr. Ridley be your personal guide to help repair your metabolism and experience natural, healthy weight loss.
More than half of all American adults are overweight. This increases risk for developing back and joint pain as well as serious complications, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and more — diseases responsible for approximately 300,000 deaths a year.
So you may be thinking, “Why is it so hard for me to lose weight?” I’m doing “everything right,” and yet still weight loss is difficult. Perhaps (like many of my patients) you’re already following a strict diet and working out several times a week, but to no avail. The weight still won’t come off — or, worse, you are gaining weight for seemingly no reason at all! Below are some of the unique ways we will explore to help you lose weight and repair your metabolism!
Detoxification and Weight Loss
Purification, also known as detoxification, can help you remove natural toxins from your body and help maintain a healthy weight. We are exposed to external toxins on a daily basis. These include pollutants, pesticides, and chemicals. Internally our bodies produce waste byproducts as a result of normal metabolic function. Although your body is designed to rid itself of these toxins naturally, it can become overburdened. Purification offers your body additional support to expel and metabolize these toxins and manage weight, which is important to maintaining your health and vitality. If your fat cells are holding onto a lot of toxins, weight loss can release these toxins into your blood stream leaving you feeling sick. This is why people doing quick fix starvation diets or un-monitored detox’s often feel worse and get sick. We will help you lose weight and keep it off without feeling sick!
Some people are born with food allergies and some people develop them later in life. We do food allergy/sensitivity testing to assist with weight loss because food allergies/sensitivities create stress and inflammation in the body. Some severe reactions can occur within minutes. Other milder reactions can take days. Either type of reaction causes an increase in stress and inflammation throughout the body which affects insulin sensitivity and creates many other problems that can lead to weight gain. The increase in stress is another cause of weight gain and difficulty in losing weight. And some allergies, such as gluten, can lead to even more serious health problems.
Often, one of the big reasons people struggle with weight loss is insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone released in response to blood sugar which greatly impacts weight gain and weight loss. It forces your cells to use sugar instead of fat for energy. If your cells become resistant to insulin, sugar will not get used for energy and will instead be stored as fat. If too much sugar builds up in the blood, diabetes can result, causing severe damage to the body. Your body is either burning sugar, or burning fat for energy. With weight loss as our goal, we would like the body to predominantly be burning fat. High insulin levels not only keep your body from burning fat, making it very hard to lose weight, but it is also very inflammatory. Restoring insulin sensitivity is a great way to reduce body fat, and it is also the best anti-aging step you can take.
Adrenal gland assessment is one more test we do at LiveWell to try to get down to the root cause of weight gain and difficult weight loss. Adrenal stress, adrenal fatigue and adrenal alarm reactions can all lead to a disruption in cortisol and insulin. These are 2 very important culprits/hormones when it comes to weight issues.

Sleep Disturbance Impairs Weight Loss
A healthy body constantly repairs itself, and sleep is when most of the repair occurs. During deep sleep, growth hormone levels increase. Muscles need growth hormone in order to repair after exercise, and when you have more muscle mass, you’re burning more calories and fat. Leptin, another hormone predominately produced during sleep, is what tells the brain you are full after eating – meaning, if you are not getting good quality sleep, you are more likely to have increased food cravings. Insomnia and poor sleep quality is serious for a lot of reasons, and decreasing weight loss is just one of the many reasons we need to get down the root cause of your sleep disruption!
Digestion and Weight Loss
Your body contains trillions of bacteria that line the intestines. Some of these bacteria are very beneficial for the body, helping you break down food into nutrients. Others cause serious illnesses, nutrient absorption problems, and general inflammation. Dr. Ridley can do tests that look at the balance of your flora as well as test for leaky gut/intestinal permeability and then work with you to restore your digestive health as one more way to help lose weight and restore balance to your body.
